Amidst the Waves Called Life

We live in a conditioned world. This body is conditioned. Feelings are conditioned. Relationships are conditioned. The weather of the heart, the state of the mind, health, age, work, even the people we love — everything is constantly changing according to causes and conditions.

Sometimes life feels beautiful and light. Sometimes it feels exhausting and suffocating. There are days when the heart feels full of spirit, and there are days when even getting out of bed feels heavy. This is indeed the nature of conditioned life: unstable, constantly moving, constantly changing.

However, suffering often arises not merely from the change itself, but from the mind's desire to find something permanent in a world that is inherently impermanent.

We want our bodies to remain strong. Relationships to stay warm. Feelings to remain pleasant. Life to go as expected. But the deeper we observe, the more we realise that not a single condition can truly be maintained.

And it is precisely at this point that wisdom begins to grow.

Not by fighting life. Not by becoming cold or indifferent. But by slowly learning to see that there is something within this awareness that does not need to sink along with every change.

The sky remains vast, even when the weather changes.

Awareness can acknowledge sadness without having to become “a broken person”. Awareness can acknowledge fear without being completely submerged in it. Even loss can be recognised as an experience that arises and passes within the mind.

This is not a denial of emotions. Not a suppression of feelings. Quite the opposite — we begin to dare to feel life more fully, because we are no longer so afraid of change.

When the heart no longer clings so tightly, life begins to feel lighter.

We still love, but we no longer hold on as tightly. We still work, but we do not entirely make success our identity. We still experience happiness and sadness, but we slowly understand that all of these are merely guests who come and go.

There is a peace that does not depend on whether today goes as planned or not.

And perhaps this is what is meant by living through the unconditioned amidst a conditioned world.

Not escaping from life.
Not abandoning the world.
But learning to dwell amidst change with an increasingly free heart.

Because the world will keep changing. Bodies will age. People will come and go. Praise and criticism will remain. Sometimes life feels beautiful, sometimes it feels heartbreaking.

But amidst all that, we slowly begin to find a stillness that is not born and dies with every condition.

And from there, gentleness arises.

Gentleness towards oneself.
Gentleness towards others.
Gentleness towards life as it is.

Let the world change as it may.
Let the heart learn not to cling to everything.
Amidst that which is born and vanishes,
may wisdom remain in stillness.
